Final Reflection
Reflection: In this reflection, I will be talking about five elements that are included in my portfolio. The five elements that will be discussed are inquiry, revision, collaboration, intertextuality, and rhetorical awareness. There are many examples of these elements in my portfolio but they also exist in what we discussed in class.
The definition of inquiry is to seek information by asking many questions and conducting investigations. The main example that I can give for inquiry is our inquiry project. For our first step, we had to pick a broad topic then break it down to a simple question. This question had to be very specific. After this is done, we must research different types of scholar articles and novels about our specific question. After collecting all of the information needed, we should be able to ask questions about the information we collected and be able to connect it together. The amount of questions that were thought during this project were daunting. Other examples that had inquiries in them were our dialogic journals and our group prezi.
The definition of revision is the alteration of ones work or acts. All of the examples that had the element of revision were the different drafts we had to do for our inquiry project and our Multi-Modal monster essays. The first draft we write has all of the facts that we found during the research process. Once we have our first draft completed, we look to see what information can be organized and cleaned up. The revision process helps us shorten our essays to make them more specific or sometimes they help add information. Ms. Steele, our English teacher, and the students in class gave us feedback on our drafts and their comments helped me revise my drafts through different workshops.
The definition of collaboration is working together with others on a project. A great example of collaboration would be the group prezi. In our group, we all had different tasks assigned to us to create a prezi for class. We first had to create many questions about our topic then research those questions by looking up different scholarly articles about our questions. Everyone had a part in the group to do and that is how we got the project done. Collaborating with everyone helps get assignments done quicker.
The definition of intertextuality is the way that similar texts influence each other. The main example that I would use for intertextuality is our dialogic journals. In our dialogic journals, we have to write our responses in other student's journals about how we feel about their summaries of different essays that they have read. I can always relate to what they write and see and understand what they mean. I can also give them my opinion on what I say about their summaries. Relating to their texts with mine is a great way to connect and compare both of our writings.
The definition of rhetorical awareness is to analyze and understand the purpose, audience, and context of your writing. In my inquiry presentation, I made sure to tell the class all of the factors of my inquiry through my three genres. In my social genre, I showed what type of audience that my inquiry is about. The audience is different parents that live in different environments, such as a rich neighborhood or a poor neighborhood. My academic genre helped explain what my inquiry is about and the purpose of it. The paper that I wrote explained how child development is affected by the environment in different ways. My last genre, my professional piece, incorporated my purpose, audience, and context altogether in one magazine article that I made. Analyzing all of these factors in this project helped me understand rhetorical awareness.
